The Fishing

Fortress Lake is a paradise for fly anglers, renowned for its population of genetically pure Nipigon Coaster brook trout—among the largest on the planet. These trophy fish average 3–6 lbs, with lake records reaching an astounding 11¾ lbs. Anglers experience exhilarating battles with these aggressive, vibrant trout in crystal-clear waters framed by the breathtaking backdrop of towering peaks and glaciers. With exclusive fishing rights and a dedicated catch-and-release policy, Fortress Lake ensures an unforgettable fishing experience and the preservation of a truly world-class fishery.

Throughout the fishing season, Fortress Lake offers diverse and exciting fly-fishing opportunities. In early summer, anglers witness epic chironomid hatches, triggering spectacular surface action that provides thrilling sight-fishing conditions. Late summer and early autumn bring cooler temperatures and vibrant fall colors, making each cast feel even more magical. Whether you're stripping streamers through pristine bays or delicately placing dry flies in secluded pockets, each day spent on Fortress Lake promises the rare combination of trophy fishing and unparalleled wilderness beauty.

Craig Somers
Owner & Operator of Fortress Lake

Craig has been casting lines since he could walk, tagging along on fishing adventures with his dad. What began as a childhood pastime quickly grew into a lifelong passion. That love for fishing took him all the way to Mexico, where he managed several resorts before returning to Canada and eventually discovering the place that would capture his heart and feel like home: Fortress Lake.

“Landing at Fortress Lake is the best high blood pressure medicine out there,” Craig says. “You touch down, and your stress just melts away.”
